A 3D scanner is a scanner that you use to scan not the ink on a sheet of paper, but rather the contours and shape of a three dimensional object in order to get a 3D recreation of it on a computer screen that can be manipulated, edited, used in calculations, used as a reference or blueprint, or even sent as data.

At the same time you could edit the image in order to restore it and see it as it once looked (and adding textures can also help this) or you might send the file across the globe so that it can also be studied by other archeologists who cannot see it in person.

Plastic Surgery: Again it's not what you would instantly associate with a portable 3D scanner, but it's use makes perfect sense. Here you would create a 3D image of the persons face, and you could then manipulate this image in 3D in order to see how they would look with a smaller nose or ears. This then allows them to make an informed decision and ensures that the surgeon and patient are on the same page.

Industrial Design: Whether designing car parts, toys, watches or anything else that needs to be mass produced, using prototypes and 3D scanners allows you to edit and look at 3D images of the item on a screen and to make changes and tests without wasting a lot of valuable materials.

Commercial Sales: A 3 D scanner is also very useful for promoting items to the commercial market. For instance if you can scan in a toy, a watch or an ornament using a 3D scanner, you can then allow your potential customers to view the items in 3D before making a purchase.
