3D scanners have been the topic of much debate as people were stunned around the world when airports starting using full body scans to ensure the safety and security of people who were boarding flights. While it is not nearly as invasive as most people think, 3D scanners have been used for some time and are continuing to change the world for the better in just about every industry around the globe.

Medicine and the 3D Scanner

The 3D scanner has really changed the world of medicine. It has been used for ages by plastic surgeons who want to make sure that their patients know what they are getting into. Many people have unrealistic expectations of plastic surgery. What the 3 D scanner does is allow for the patient to be scanned and then for the surgeon to show them what they can do with the surgery that is being discussed. This allows the surgeon to really show the patient what they can expect so the patient is clear.

The 3D scanner has also been used to help obese patients see the results of surgery and dieting. In many instances a dietician will use the 3D scanner to do full body scans to show the patient what they have been able to accomplish. With a three dimensional image the patient will be better able to see the changes that they are making to their body. These are the changes that they may not really see when they look in the mirror from day to day. When they are able to compare the images they will have the motivation that they need to continue to work toward their weight goal.

The world of prosthetics has also been helped by the 3D scanner. Now when a patient has an amputation done they don’t have to suffer through ill fitting prosthetics as long. Instead, a 3D scanner will be used to scan the portion of the limb that is still there so that a prosthetic can be created that fits the stub perfectly. This means that there is less rubbing and irritation, so that the amputee can get back up and moving around as long as soon as possible.

Industry and the 3D Scanner

There are a lot of industries in which the 3D scanner has been helpful. It is often used in the automotive world to recreate parts. A desired part, such as an exhaust, can be scanned and then duplicated exactly. This is especially helpful for custom made bikes in which each part is made specifically for each bike.

The 3D scanner is also a great asset in media where computer graphics are needed. Animation is better than ever thanks to the ability to scan the human body and allow for more human like shape and movement in characters than ever before. The scanner is what has made animation more life like than ever before.

As you can see, the 3D scanner is a part of so much of what we do, what we see, and what we have. While we may never come into contact with one ourselves, their use and capability is all around us in so much of what we do and take for granted in our day to day lives.
